Saya sedang mengubek-ngubek folder tiba-tiba terdapat folder yang berisi tugas-tugas selam saya kuliah S1 dulu yang sudah bertahun-tahun lamanya. Tulisan ini merupakan rangkuman dari beberapa referensi bagaimana kita dapat mencegah terjadinya kanker.

What makes people afraid of deadly stuff in recent years, is having a cancer in our body. Why? Our immune would degrade as soon as possible then we don’t have any antibody again. The worst impact is nothing body protector from strange objects entering the body, which weaken our health and even cause a death. Somehow, cancer would be hidden death; we can’t feel the suffering at first–let alone the physical sign– but slowly, when we enter the high stadium of cancer phase we definitely get extraordinary pain. Whether we like it or not, cancer affects each one of us directly or indirectly. Since the cancer is difficult being healed or threatened, people should prevent it through simple lifestyle changes. Preventing cancer is easier than you may think. So, we would see that there are ten ways to avoid cancer so far. For instances:

  1. Avoid smoking, whether it would be actual or secondhand smoking. By smoking a dozen or even more the number of cigarettes will cause lung cancer and another risk factors for cancers.
  2. Protect your skin from sun lihgt and recognize it when changes occur. Just avoid walking outdoors during the sun’s peak time, which is 10am-2pm, even it is shady. Use suncreen or sunblock to protect your skin and be recognized of any skin’s moles. Any changes need reporting to a doctor
  3. Eat fruits and vegetables. Why? Because they are rich in atioxidant , which help in repairing our damaged cells. Green/orange veggies and yellow fruits/veggies would be the best one.
  4. Watch out of eating meats, especially smoked or cured foods. Research says that eating so much animal fat can lead to the development of certain cancer. Just keep an eye on diet in smoked foods, salted fish and meat, and pickle vegetables because it would increase risk factor for cancer.
  5. Limit in drinking alcohol. Research says that drinking large amount of alcohol would regularly increase risk factor for cancer.
  6. Take exercise. It means that maintaining or reaching ideal wight by taking some exercises or work outs. Having ideal wight is one of the best defenses against cancer.
  7. Know personal and family history of cancer. By knowing our family history of cancer would assist us in finding out wether we carry a mutated gene that increase risk factor for cancer.
  8. Watch out of what chemicals we are being exposed in our work environment such as gasoline, diesel exhaust, arsenic, berylium, vinyl chloride, nickel chromates, coal products, mustard gas, and chloromethyl ethers are all carcinogens (something which triggers having cancer) and can be found in some work environments.
  9. Practice safe sex. Why should we follow it? Because unsafe sex can result in the infection of the HPV virus. It causes cervical cancer when women commonly get infected. HPV is a virus transmitted through sexual intercourse.
  10. Take regularly screening test like Pap smear, Mammograms and DRE (Digital Rectal Exam). This screening would be important particularly for women and men. Pap smear may be able to detect cervics cancer and Mammograms able to detect breast cancer.
