Dyadic Relationship, Followership and Delegation

Do you have experience that your boss talk differently when he/she near her/his subordinate? perhaps it is dyadic relationship. It is possible that your boss is exhibiting dyadic leadership behavior, which involves adjusting communication and behavior based on the specific relationship with each subordinate. This style of leadership can be effective in building trust and rapport with individual team members.

Dyadic theory said that why leader vary their relationship to their subordinate? there are many reasons why the leader carried out this as follows:

  1. leader and followers have different interest. The relationship will increase if they share the same attitude.
  2. the leader and follower have a huge gap of relationship or different communication. Perhaps the followers have a low trust on their leader and vice versa.

4 Stages of development / dyadic approach

  1. Vertical Dyadic Linkage Theory. at this stage, leader create individual relationship among their followers. In this theory leader treat their follower in the same way (ALS) and the second is leader treat the follower differently (VDL). Selective group may create in and out group
  2. Leader-Member Exchange (LMX), At this stage, leader try to embrace each of the dyad and try to keep monitor the growth
  3. Team Building. Effective leadership involves building strong relationships with all followers, not just specific individuals. At this stage, leadership should build strong connection among all his followers.
  4. Systems and Networks. at this stage the coverage of dyadic relationship is larger and across the boundaries of the organization

Obviously, the leader should build relationship to all followers not a certain people because the advantage of great relationship between leader and follower (LMX) can bring positive impact to the organization. Further, building positive relationships with all followers can bring many benefits to the organization, such as increased trust, improved communication, and better collaboration. These three things are very essential in leadership. This can lead to higher job satisfaction and productivity among employees, which ultimately contributes to the success of the organization. Always remember that employee are the ultimate assets that need to be maintained their engagement.

in Vertical Dyadic Linkage Theory, there are two type of the leader and follower relationship:

  1. In-group refers to subordinates who have strong social ties with their leader (very close to the leader). The characteristic of this group are people-oriented style, having mutual trust on their leaders, having a larger support from their leader, having mutual relationship with their leader.
  2. while out-group refers to subordinates who have little or no social ties with their leader and are managed in a task-oriented, top-down manner. For example, the followers just work because they carried out the task only. Perhaps they have lack of trust on their boss so they just do a minimal things

leader without followers are nothing. Without followers, a leader cannot lead or make an impact. There are 4 type of followers:

  1. Alienated follower: no participation, lack of trust
  2. Conformist followers: always carry out what leaders ask, avoid the conflict.
  3. Passive followers: they just do minimal effort
  4. Effective followers: full participation, high trust
  5. Pragmatic followers: sometime passive sometime effective, depends on the situation

An effective leaders should have the ability to delegate. but what kind of delegation?

  1. Paperwork, related to the document need to be visited or analyzed
  2. Routine Tasks, all daily task related to the responsibility
  3. Solving Employees’Problems. we can not avoid the conflict, sometime conflict may arise so an effective leader should not hesitate to solve their follower’s problems
  4. Tasks with Developmental Potential, related to the carrer path or talent carrer development. Leaders can do a coaching.
  5. Technical Matters.

after this there are so many things to do as a leader but bulding the relationship within the team is very urgent. As a leader, building strong relationships within your team is essential for success. This can be achieved through open communication, actively listening to team members, showing appreciation and respect, and fostering a positive team culture to all member not just certain people.
